Dr. Tamer Shafik delivered a keynote and joined the panel at ECPC 2026, hosted by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT), on “The Talent Code in Industrial IoT & Edge Computing”. These are the ideas behind it.
Industrial IoT projects rarely fail because of a sensor. They stall because the organization lacks people who can connect plant-floor reality, data engineering and business value.
The skills gap is a hybrid gap
Engineers who understand machines, IT professionals who understand data and security, and managers who understand return on investment: the scarce profile combines at least two of these worlds.
Edge computing changes the job
Processing close to the machine reduces latency and bandwidth, but it also distributes responsibility. Patching, security and monitoring now live on the plant floor, and the people there need new skills.
Building the pipeline
- Partnerships between industry and academic institutions built around real plants and real data.
- Career paths that let people move between operational technology and IT.
- Hiring for curiosity and learning agility, because tools change faster than curricula.
Technology is the engine, but mindset is the fuel. In industrial IoT, the mindset is what turns connected machines into a connected business.
